The 110th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 16th September 1885 over the 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Melton, a bay colt by Master Kildare out of Violet Melrose, owned by the 20th Baron Hastings. A field of 10 runners contested the race, although there were 206 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 5150 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £4,825 (Equivalent to £554,900 in 2017)
